№ 01 — Side by side
Taxi vs the rail route
| Fixed-price taxi | Train + shuttle | |
|---|---|---|
| Direct service | Yes — your MK address to the terminal | No — at least one change en route |
| Typical route | M1 direct, ~26 mi / 33 min | MK → change (e.g. Leighton Buzzard / Bedford) → Luton Airport Parkway → shuttle (DART) |
| Transfers | None | One or more changes, plus the DART shuttle to the terminal |
| Luggage | Boot to door, loaded for you | Carried across platforms and the shuttle yourself |
| Price | £50 fixed for up to 4 | Per-person tickets + DART fare; peak fares high |
| Best for | Almost everyone, given the indirect rail | Solo, light, flexible, near a useful station |

№ 02 — Why the train is awkward here
Closest airport, indirect line
Luton sits only about 26 miles from Milton Keynes, but MK Central and Luton Airport Parkway aren't on the same line. Getting between them by rail means at least one change, then the DART shuttle from the Parkway up to the terminal. It's doable, but it turns a short hop into a multi-leg trip — the opposite of what you want before a flight.
№ 03 — When the taxi wins
A 35-minute run up the M1
Because the road route is direct and short, the taxi advantage here is bigger than at any other airport. You're collected at your door and driven straight up the M1 in around 33 minutes for a fixed £50 — no change, no shuttle, no luggage juggling. For all but the most flexible solo traveller, it's the easier and often better-value way to reach Luton.
